CORNEA SURGERY

Surgeries can range from minimally invasive procedures to more advanced ones. Some of them stop the progression of the disease and improve visual quality; and others can restore vision.

[ONE OF THE MOST COMMON CORNEAL DISEASES IS KERATOCONUS].

SOME CORNEAL DISEASES

[TYPES OF KERATOCONUS SURGERY]

It will depend on the severity of the condition and how quickly is progressing:

Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments (ICRS)
The ICRS are small, crescent‐shaped plastic rings that have unique biocompatibility with the tissues of the eye. This treatment can help flatten the cornea to improve vision.

Corneal cross-linking (CXL)
It is a surgical procedure whose purpose is to prevent the progression of the disease. The cornea is saturated with vitamin B2 eye drops and treated with ultraviolet light, to stiffen the cornea to prevent further shape changes.

Athens Protocol
It is the combination of Corneal Crosslinking with PRK refractive surgery. Se emplea el láser para remodelar la córnea, e inmediatamente se aplica una solución de riboflavina; la cual es activada por la aplicación de luz ultravioleta para fortalecer la córnea. El objetivo es mejorar la visión y la resistencia de la córnea.
