CORNEA SURGERY
Surgeries can range from minimally invasive procedures to more advanced ones. Some of them stop the progression of the disease and improve visual quality; and others can restore vision.
[ONE OF THE MOST COMMON CORNEAL DISEASES IS KERATOCONUS].
SOME CORNEAL DISEASES
It is a degenerative disorder of the cornea that bulges outward into a cone shape, developing astigmatism and visual distortion at all distances. Treatment ranges from contact lenses to surgery.
is an open sore in the outer layer of the cornea often caused by infections, that if left untreated, can lead to vision loss.
is an inflammation of the cornea that may or may not be associated with bacterial infections, fungi or parasites. Can be caused by a relatively minor injury, such as from wearing your contact lenses too long.
is a fleshy, triangular-shaped growth of tissue on the ocular surface, commonly known as "surfer's eye". In some cases it can grow and cover part of the cornea interfering with vision.
It is a smaller, yellowish variant of pterygium, which does not extend into the central area of the eye and does not affect vision.
[TYPES OF KERATOCONUS SURGERY]
It will depend on the severity of the condition and how quickly is progressing:
Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments (ICRS)
The ICRS are small, crescent‐shaped plastic rings that have unique biocompatibility with the tissues of the eye. This treatment can help flatten the cornea to improve vision.
Corneal cross-linking (CXL)
It is a surgical procedure whose purpose is to prevent the progression of the disease. The cornea is saturated with vitamin B2 eye drops and treated with ultraviolet light, to stiffen the cornea to prevent further shape changes.
Athens Protocol
It is the combination of Corneal Crosslinking with PRK refractive surgery.
Se emplea el láser para remodelar la córnea, e inmediatamente se aplica una solución de riboflavina; la cual es activada por la aplicación de luz ultravioleta para fortalecer la córnea. El objetivo es mejorar la visión y la resistencia de la córnea.
