GLAUCOMA
This disease can be developed at any age, and is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide.
[MANY FORMS OF GLAUCOMA HAVE NO WARNING SIGNS, ONLY WHEN THE DAMAGE IS IRREVERSIBLE]
HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?
Tests to diagnose and monitor glaucoma:
Visual Field Test:
Allows to evaluate the central and peripheral vision of the eye.
Allows to evaluate the central and peripheral vision of the eye.
Pachymetry:
This test measures the thickness of the cornea.
This test measures the thickness of the cornea.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) or Posterior Segment:
Allows to evaluate the optic nerve layers or fibers and their excavations.
Allows to evaluate the optic nerve layers or fibers and their excavations.
Intraocular Pressure (IOP) Control):
Intraocular pressure measurement
Intraocular pressure measurement
Applanation Tonometry:
It measures the IOP inside the eye
It measures the IOP inside the eye

GLAUCOMA THERAPIES AND SURGERIES
[Laser Therapy]
It is performed when eyedrop therapy is not well tolerated or initial treatment has not slowed the progression of the disease.
[Glaucoma Filtering]
It is also known as Trabeculectomy. A minimal incision is made in the sclera (the white part of the eye), opening another drainage space to lower the IOP.
[Drainage Implant or Tube Shunt]
A microscopic device is placed in the eye creating a new way for liquid to drain from the eye and decrease intraocular pressure.
[MIGS]
These procedures require less postoperative care and sometimes it is combined with cataract surgery.

How is it diagnosed?
Glaucoma treatments and surgery
What is glaucoma?
Eye disease characterized by increased intraocular pressure, hardness of the eyeball, atrophy of the optic papilla and blindness.
How is it diagnosed?
It is diagnosed by measuring intraocular pressure (tonometry) Checking for damage to the optic nerves with a dilated pupil examination and imaging tests. Checking areas of vision loss (visual field testing) Measuring corneal thickness with a test called pachymetry.
